Conocidos también como W & Y, el Dúo de la Historia y El Dúo Dinámico, se los sitúa entre las representantes más destacados del reggaetón, un subgénero musical bailable descendiente del reggae y del hip hop que comenzó a hacerse popular a finales de la década de 1990, y cuyas letras motivaron en ocasiones fuertes polémicas por sus contenidos racistas, violentos o abiertamente sexuales. 
En su ciudad natal, Wisin trabajaba de peluquero, mientras que Yandel había concluido estudios de teatro e interpretación. En cuestiones musicales compartían los mismos gustos, y pronto debutaron en el mundillo grabando algunos temas en álbumes recopilatorios. En 1998 participaron en el álbum No Fear 3, producido por DJ Dicky; un año después, en el recopilatorio La Misión, Vol 1, editado por el sello Fresh Production. El éxito de esta recopilación (que llegó a disco de oro) llevó a la discográfica a producir Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, primer álbum de Wisin y Yandel. 

A partir de ese momento el dúo cosechó un éxito tras otro. Continuaron publicando nuevos temas en las sucesivas ediciones de La Misión y grabaron tres nuevos álbumes: De Nuevos a Viejos (2001), Mi Vida... My Life (2003) y De Otra Manera (2004). Los tres fueron disco de oro. Su todavía incipiente carrera musical se vio además reconocida con el Premio Tu Música al mejor dúo de rap y reggaetón, que les fue otorgado en 2002. 

Pese a que se hallaban en un momento dulce, se especuló sobre una posible separación del dúo cuando, en 2004, aparecieron El Sobreviviente de Wisin y ¿Quién contra mí? de Yandel, primeros álbumes en solitario. La cifras de ventas también fueron destacables, pero igualmente el temido divorcio no llegó a consignarse en su biografía. En 2005 Wisin y Yandel, tan o más unidos que antes, presentaron Pa'l Mundo. Incluía canciones que se hicieron famosas de inmediato, como Rakata y Noche de Sexo. En definitiva, otro éxito rotundo que mereció que el álbum fuese nominado para los Premios Billboard. 

El dúo anunció ese mismo año la creación de su propia discográfica, WY Records, con la que publicarían al año siguiente Los Vaqueros y Los Vaqueros Wild Wild Mixes (remix del anterior); para su grabación contaron con colaboraciones de destacadas figuras del reggaetón. Canciones como El teléfono y Yo te quiero se hicieron inmensamente populares. Menor éxito tuvo 2010 Lost Edition, una recopilación de temas anteriores. 

Su relevancia dentro del género es tal que a la suma de los componentes del dúo y el indiscutible Don Omar se la conoce como El triángulo de las Bermudas del reggaetón. Ellos mismos han empezado a llamarse Los Extraterrestres, que fue también el título de un álbum con nuevas canciones que lanzaron en 2007. A su exitosa discografía vinieron a sumarse en 2008 Los Extraterrestres Reloaded: Otra Dimensión (que en septiembre de 2008 llevaba vendidas diez millones de copias) y Wisin & Yandel: La Mente Maestra.
